Dr. John-Foster Parent Coach

Having challenges with your foster child?  Dr. John can help you and your family.   Foster parent coaching is designed to fit your family' needs. International foster care expert Dr. John DeGarmo will help you to understand your foster child’s behavior, and learn what to do to help it improve in a positive and healthy fashion.  Dr. John will work with you, and help you to gain new skills, tools, and strategies as a foster parent.   What you will not get is a diagnosis from your foster  coach.  Instead, Dr. John will help you develop solid, usable tools and strategies to help your foster child become a part of your family.

What is a Foster Parent Coach?
  • A foster parent coach is a  professional who helps you develop a better relationship with your foster child.
  • Whether on the phone, in-person, or Skype, your foster parent coach will give  you specialized support and advice based on your family’s specific needs.
  • Your foster parent coach addresses issues such as problems with transitions into your home, routines, power struggles, parental anger, discipline, homework challenges, chores, cyber safety, and disrespectful behavior.
  • Your foster parent coach will assist your family in creating parenting plans.  Dr. John will  then support you and your family as you practice and implement these plans.

Why a Foster Parent Coach?
International foster care expert Dr. John will help you with foster children who have ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Defiance, adoption or foster care issues,  struggles with school academic and behavior issues, or other issues and challenges that are facing your child and your family.

How does it Work?
Dr. John will meet with your family  for 1½ hours during the first appointment, and 1 hour for each session after that. On average, foster parents have four appointments.  If they wish, families can continue to meet with Dr. John, if the need should continue.   Individual sessions can be spent with Dr. John, as well.

The appointments are usually two weeks apart.  This will allow you to  implement the techniques that Dr. John has developed for your family.  At the next session, you then meet with your foster parent coach to get your questions answered and find more solutions and strategies.  Of course,  you can also request once-a-week appointments, if you wish.

Appointments can be over the phone, or over the internet, such as SKYPE.

You are a foster parent; you are busy, and you have plenty to do.  As a foster parent himself, Dr. John understands this, and respects your time.  Your foster parent coach wants you to achieve quick and lasting results. He will ask you to complete a information form prior to the first call so Dr. John can begin to better understand your the challenges facing you and your family before you even meet with him. Your time with Dr. John will focus on specific strategies that will best help you not only better understand your foster child, but meet his needs, as well.

Through one-on-one parent coaching and the parenting sessions, Dr. John will provide you the education and support for the most important job any of us will ever have.  After all, foster parenting is a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week, 365 day job every year.  It is the hardest thing you do, and the most important thing you can do, as well.  You are planting the seeds of love in a child, and changing his life for the better.  Dr. John, your foster parenting coach, is here to help, guide, and support you, your family, and your child in foster care.

'For I was hungry, and you gave me something to eat; I was
thirsty, and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in.’

-Matthew 25:35
